The nasopalatine duct is an air passage between the mouth and the organ of Jacobson in the nasal septum of many animals, including cats and cattle. Jacobson’s organ is used to sense pheromones and assess the state of sexual readi- ness of potential mates. Humans have no Jacobson’s organ, though the duct forms in embryos and then involutes. Rem- nants of the vestigial duct sometimes persist and occasion- ally give rise to nasopalatine duct cysts.
